Chairperson Cindy Watkin's recent letter to the WRDSB Trustees: |
Good Morning: The recent decision to revisit location possibilities for the Waterloo East school and not move forward immediately with the Schooner site (as was voted on and accepted June 2nd) is extremely disappointing to the residents of Eastbridge. We were most pleased on June 2nd with the conclusion for a school to be build on the Schooner site; it seemed that many Trustees truly listened to our concerns, our thoughts and came to a positive conclusion, one that would benefit the children and families in our spirited Community. Folks in the neighbourhood absolutely do not want their children crossing University Avenue to attend school or leave our community to do so. That is an understatement. In light of the recent decision to consider other possible sites and on behalf of the residents of our Community, I'd like to request your support in continuing to move forward with the Schooner location as originally discussed, voted on and accepted earlier this month. I'd be more than happy to discuss this with you further as your schedule may allow over the summer or could certainly set up a time to take you by the Schooner site in question, walk the paths that directly go to the site and then have a look too at the traffic on University Ave first hand. It is truly of a concern and we'd appreciate your support. I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks for your time and consideration!!
Cindy Watkin Chairperson Eastbridge Neighbourhood Association

New School Location Not Certain |

New Northeast Waterloo School Approved Site yet to be Determined Monday, June 23, 2008, Kitchener, Ontario….At a Board meeting held this evening, trustees gave final approval for the construction of a new junior kindergarten to grade 6 facility on a site yet to be determined. Board Chair, Andrea Mitchell commented, “Staff will consult with the City of Waterloo to clarify their plans and the schedule for development in the northeast area of Waterloo. The report will come back to trustees in September 2008.” Provided the Ministry of Education gives approval, the new school is scheduled to open in September 2010. Approximately 400 junior kindergarten to grade 6 students currently attending Lester B. Pearson PS will attend the new school.
The enrolment at Lester B. Pearson PS has been a concern in recent years as the enrolment has grown well beyond the building’s capacity. The school currently has 1007 students accommodated in the school and in portables.

Lester B Pearson Boundary |
|
The Waterloo District Regional School Board Trustees have voted in favour of constructing a JK-6 School behind Schooner Crescent in Eastbridge to change the Lester B Pearson boundary and address the overpopulation at LBP. This is in tentative stages as final approvals etc are still necessary later this month, and it would be scheduled to open September 2010. At the WRDSB meeting Monday night, many concerned Eastbridge residents pulled together to voice their opinions and the Trustees listened! Further details will be in the September edition of the Insight, the deadline had passed by many weeks to include anything in the June edition that is currently being delivered to every home. Below is Chairperson Cindy Watkin's presentation to the School Board which sums up the scenarios and concerns: Presentation Regarding the LBP Boundary Review, Monday, June 2, 2008 Good evening, Madame Chair and Trustees, thank you for the opportunity to present tonight. I have the distinct privilege of being here with three "hats" on; as a member of the Boundary Study Working Group, Chairperson of the Eastbridge Neighbourhood Association and concerned parent. I'd like to address the three scenarios from the Report to Committee of the Whole: |

Hello, My name is Katie Eley and I am the local coordinator for a program called the Summer Work Student Exchange program run by the YMCA, which is a 6 week home exchange to Quebec for 16 and 17 year olds in the KW community. We are currently accepting applications up until next week for individuals who may want to take part in this exciting opportunity this summer, which is completely funded by the federal government. If you would please pass on the following information to your community members I would be greatly appreciated. Additionally, because this is a home exchange program the students from KW are required to have a place to host the students from Quebec (typically this is through their family). Unfortunately many of the applicants to the program this year are unable to host students for various reasons including language barriers (the family not speaking English), location, and work schedules. This means that unless we are able to find host families in the community, many of these participants will be unable to do so. If you could please let the members of your community know that we are currently looking for individuals to host a child for a period of 6 weeks this summer that would be wonderful.
